Today we found out that in three to four months time we should have a Hereford calf running around.
After hosting a pedigree Hereford bull over the winter we had our two heifers pregnancy tested today and found out that Fuchsia is pregnant.
It’s both brilliant and disappointing that only one is pregnant, but such is life and I’m terribly excited to welcome the calf onto the farm in the summer.
The test was carried out prior to the girls heading back out onto grass.
We spent the morning preparing the paddock for them; cutting the hedge, fixing fence posts and re-attaching tired barbed wire – all through a flurry of hail storms.
It’s really wonderful to see the pair enjoying life back outside, as grass fed cattle the lush green grass must be delicious after a winter of hay and silage.
We’re now formulating a plan to introduce a third heifer to the farm (earlier than planned) and once the new girl is settled in we will send Primrose away on her hols to run with another bull.
