The last calf of the year arrives…

19th September 2019 Kate4 Comments

Our last calf of the year took its time to arrive. The dam (mum) had been showing signs of the impending birth for a couple of weeks – her udder was gradually getting bigger as the milk prepared to come through and she was showing signs of discharge in the days leading up to the… Continue reading The last calf of the year arrives…

A birth on the farm…

21st May 201921st May 2019 Kate1 Comment

A few weeks ago the cows moved outside for summer and have since been enjoying the lush grass and sunshine. The first cow set to give birth this year is due in late June – imagine then my surprise when on a dog walk last night at about 10.30pm I flash the torch across a… Continue reading A birth on the farm…

How to train a robin… For years I’ve thought How to train a robin…

For years I’ve thought about trying to get closer to the robins in my garden, to eventually feed them from my hand.

Over the past week I’ve spent the odd hour here and there weeding in the garden and every time I do at least one robin appears.

On day one of this escapade I’ve seen two robins appear to feed from my terracotta pot of mealworms - from a distance of about four metres.

I’ve been chatting to them at the same time and hope they’ll get to know me!

It would be great to hear from anyone who has tried to do the same!

Over the past month, one notable thing has happened in my journey to becoming a Pink Tractor Lady - my collection of pink paraphernalia has increased dramatically!!

I can’t pass a charity shop without rifling through it for anything I might be able to decorate my tractor with for the Pink Ladies Tractor Run.

There’s been material purchased to make bunting with, wool to make pom poms with and lacy dresses to turn into something yet to be decided!

But it hasn’t stopped there - I could pass these super amazing pink leather gloves and this beret when I poodled through @zara - what a find!!

I’m still on the lookout for pink tinsel and fake flowers 🌸 if anything sees any for a steal!!

Link in my profile takes you to my recent blog about the whole affair…

It’s such a stunning morning to be out and about. The air is crisp, the frost is thick and the sun is shining.

The partial white halo in the sky could be a sign of a storm to come but if anyone knows what causes it I’d love to know. Normally they appear around the sun or moon but this is facing north/northwest almost opposite the still rising sun…

Diary of a pink tractor lady!! I’m totally gear Diary of a pink tractor lady!!

I’m totally gearing up for this year’s Pink Ladies Tractor Run🤣🤣

I have a tractor to use and today my column in @suffolkmag continued with the release of the February edition.

I’m taking part for the first time (although I’ve volunteered with them for a number of years with press coverage) and this year the iconic run is set to smash through a total of £1m raised for @cr_uk breast cancer appeal.

To follow my journey to the run on July 2 head over to my website diaryofacountrygirl.com to read all about it…

I’m sooo tempted!!! Lots of online sellers have I’m sooo tempted!!!

Lots of online sellers have cut the cost of their dahlia tubers (like @thompsonmorgan1855) and I’m struggling to resist! But do I or don’t I?!

I already have about 91 plants in the ground, they are un-mulched and I meant to dig them up and store them over winter but time got away.

I dug four up before this weeks frosts and all were ok so when it gets a bit milder I’ll dig them all up - only because I want to move them - and start potting them up from about April in the greenhouse.

In fact, I’ve just talked myself into it, I’m heading online now…

Wise words from the spectacular Vivienne Westwood. Wise words from the spectacular Vivienne Westwood. She once said we should buy less, choose well and make it last.

I’ve always loved big, bold clothes and when Covid struck I decided to never save anything for ‘best’. It’s a cliche but every day should be for best - apart from when I’m gardening, knee deep in mud. It’s all about thoroughly enjoying life…
The alliums planted in autumn 2021 and harvested l The alliums planted in autumn 2021 and harvested last year are still going strong.

It’s so satisfying to have a store of tasty onions, shallots and garlic that you’ve grown yourself.

Every year I’m a bit late getting the sets into the ground and this seasons lot were popped into the soil in December. They’ll be harvested mid to late summer and stored for use over winter.

If you have planted them already you can still have time…

The new year brings a host of new possibilities. And for me, whilst I harvest the last of 2022s homegrown chillis, there is space for new seeds to be grown, plants to be tendered and produce to be devoured.

It’s still too chilly to start this years seeds off but on sunny days like today I can’t help but be excited about the growing season to come…

My biceps are getting bigger as I try and master the art of classic tractor driving without power steering!

It’s what weekends were made for!

There’s now less than six months until the Pink Ladies Tractor Road Run and I will be taking part for the first time. This year we’re on track to break through a fundraising total of £1million…

Let me introduce you!! Here she is, the magnifice Let me introduce you!!

Here she is, the magnificent Massey that will propel me on my journey across rural roads and farm tracks when I take part in the Pink Ladies Tractor Run for the first time in July.

I met her for the first time today and with six months to go until the big day, practise started straight away! It was a gloriously sunny day and all I can say so far is that it’s brilliantly good fun to drive but boy I’d forgotten how much I take power steering for granted!!

This beauty has been fully restored and was made in France. A huge thank you to the super family that have lent it to me for the run.

To date, the event has raised £896,000 for @cr_uk’s breast cancer appeal. This year we hope to raise the £104,000 needed to break through the £1m mark, I’m sure we can do it!

Here’s to continued new challenges for 2023…
